One day I was working on a project and our contractor uprooted a tree we weren’t authorized to remove. When the contractor called me and told me they’ve made a mistake, I immediately called the local environmental office and informed them what had happened. I told them we had made a mistake and that I was responsible for what had occurred. There was no excuse for us not supervising the heavy equipment that was doing the work and that we would pay any fine awarded.
I learned early in life that once you take responsibility for your mistakes you quickly move on to finding solutions to whatever happened. This does not mean that by taking responsibility you can make mistakes without any consequences. But when things go wrong, even if it is not your fault, take responsibility and find positive solutions.
“The price of greatness is responsibility.” — Winston Churchill
